Charli XCX - I’ll Never Know
Charli bestowed another track upon us last week in the form of “Valentine”, but I’m afraid it didn’t really light my fire in the same way as her other stuff. It was a little too light, cheery, and doe-eyed. It was like a Lily Allen demo but with none of the wit and charm that Lily brought to the table in her own material.
I’m happy to report that no such worries exist with “I’ll Never Know”, which showed up on Pitchfork today. It’s similarly bright in execution as “Valentine”, but so much more convincing. The production is among the best I’ve heard in ages, and Charli herself sounds absolutely amazing, floating over those beats effortlessly. It’s bright, but it’s a persona that fits her far better than the one she wore on “Valentine”, which came across as far more unnatural and unnecessary. Charli, when you’ve got tracks this good, don’t bother with shit please!
I’m going to need an album release date very soon. I can’t wait to see what she’s got in store for us.
Man, this girl just keeps on giving. Can’t wait to hear an album announcement. I just hope she doesn’t end up being another Lana Del Rey in that the image is really all that ever mattered and when the buzz of her first few songs died down the mist cleared and revealed she was shit. So far so good, though. I can’t get Marina & The Diamonds out of my head though, which is annoying.
